On Saturday, Jan 20th, they are having a FREE Folkloric Mexican Dance Show! There is no cover for the show, so its a great opportunity to come and enjoy tender Sonoran beef and a taste of authentic Mexico.
This Bucerias restaurant Sonora a la Parrilla is a new Bucerias restaurant with a large lovely garden patio setting. They have their own butcher shop right at the restaurant and cut your choice of Marinated Arrachera, New York, Top Sirloin, Rib Eye, Beef or pork ribs, Prime Rib, T Bone, Porter House and  Vacio (Imported Angus). They also have chicken and shrimp cuisine, all cooked to perfection!  You can choose any of these cuts of beef and recieve an 8.8 oz. portion for only 99 pesos….now, that’s only $8 dollars U.S.! The meals are served with hand made tortillas, charro beans and three salsas.

You can’t find a better price for delicious tender Sonoran beef anywhere else on the Riviera Nayarit!

A Mexican Folklore Dancing Fiesta History

Mexican Folklore Dancing is an authentic Mexican dance expression that displays the colorful heritage of the beautiful country of Mexico. It is influenced by the complex history of Mexico, from the Spanish Colonial Period, the Mexican War if Independence and the 1910 Mexican Revolution.  It also has a unique mix of the Mexican Indian indigenous cultures in Mexico.
When you put it all together, it is now developed into an amazing beautiful dance with beautiful colorful costumes. The dancing itself portrays stories of the struggles and joys of Mexican life, their religious and cultural beliefs and the other festivals that they hold every year.The orgin of the Mexican Folklore dancing came from the Mesoamerican days, when the dancing was performed to appease the gods of the Mayas and the Aztecs. When the Spanish came to Mexico in the 16th Century, they brought the European style of dance like ballet, polka, waltzing and schottische, which heavily influenced the indigenous dancing.
Other conquests allowed the German, French, Italian and Spanish dances to mingle with the original Mexican folk dancing and out of that came three forms of Mexican folk dance.The first one is ‘Danza’, which is an indigenous ritual dance usually performed in religious and community settings.
The second is ‘Mestizo’, where the western influence came into play in the steps and the theme.
Then the ‘Bales Regionales’ or the regional dances are a dance form by each community. This dance is usually done in community and theatrical performances. Each state and region in Mexico  presents the Mexican dance form in a style that reflects its own unique customs and traditions.
Every Mexican community loves to celebrate life with dancing and parties. They love life, and expressing life with dance.

There is a new Bucerias restaurant named the Sonora a la Parrilla that recently opened this past November on the Riviera Nayarit in beautiful Mexico.  This new Bucerias restaurant idea came together to offer quality beef cuts at an affordable price. The new Bucerias restaurant owner Joe had visited several restaurants specializing in beef from Sonora. However, Joe wanted to go a step further and offer a pleasant environment for his diners as well as fine wine selections and other spirits.  It took seven weeks to transform the space into a beautiful and relaxing garden setting. The Bucerias restaurant, Sonora a la Parrilla, offers fine cuts of beef from the Mexican state of Sonora, known for their quality of beef. They have an in-house butcher shop where the meat is displayed, cut and weighed to the customers desires. The Sonora beef  is then put on the grill, cooked to perfection. The high quality of meat is not the only attraction in this Bucerias restaurant, corn tortillas are made fresh and included with each order, with homemade charro beans Frijoles charros (cowboy beans), a traditional Mexican dish in Bucerias.

Encino Mesquite Grilled Sonora Beef
The grill used in this Bucerias restaurant is Argentinian style and Encino mesquite is used to grill the fresh meats. Encino mesquite burns evenly creating for a better grilling. The Sonora a la Parrilla’s Bucerias restaurant side dishes include salad, grilled potatoes, grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms, corn on the cob and various types of cheese fondues. The First Bucerias Art Auction in Mexico

Come and participate in  the First Bucerias Art Auction, one of the most exciting additions to the art scene in the Bahia Banderas Bay on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico!  The sale is open to all residents and visitors. Please click on the links that lead to more information, and the photos, which lead to the Bucerias Art Galleries photo gallery.  They hope this Bucerias Art Auction Sale will become a monthly event and grow to attract buyers and sellers from a larger area. The Bucerias Art Auction is partnering with the reputable non-profit organization The Bucerias Children’s Library  / Biblioteca Rey Nayar that will benefit substantially from the proceeds.

The Action Sale will be open for various entries such as: Art pieces, Antiques, Collectables and one of a kind items. Not only does this event give the sellers an opportunity to “Clean House,”  get rid of clutter in the attic or garage,  or to move pieces from their art galleries,  but also to receive cash and contribute to a good cause, The Bucerias Children’s Library/ Biblioteca Rey Nayar.

Buyers, on the other hand, have a chance to bid and purchase on one of a kind items or art pieces they always dreamed about or, didn’t know existed while helping a good cause.  Purchasing at the Bucerias Art Auction also creates the opportunity to make a big bargain on a great piece of art, an antique or something that is wished for. With the holidays approaching, it is also a wonderful way for gift shopping.

Bucerias, Nayarit has emerged as a major hub for the Bucerias art scene, Roberto Donoghue from Canada states, “We expect collectors to follow us here and we want to expand our reach to Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta area. We’ve planned this for a long time. The conditions are right and we feel that the residents of this area are ready for this kind of exciting, philanthropic opportunity for the Bucerias Art Auction.”

New Bucerias Artist, Bucerias Art in Mexico

There is a new Bucerias art gallery, and Bucerias artist, Michael Carlyle, as he and his wife Floydilou have opened the new Bucerais art gallery, “The Drop in Art Studio & Galeria“, showing local Bucerias art,  located on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.
Here is a story in the words of the lovely Floydilou, (and yes, that is her real name!) telling their story of their journey to Bucerias Mexico.

Living on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico
We are thrilled to announce the opening of The Bucerias Drop In Art Studio & Galeria on the beautiful Riviera Nayarit. Michael and I have been looking forward to the time we could come live in Mexico.  Have you ever considered living or moving abroad? Perhaps you have that Riviera Nayarit artist inside of you and are ready to come out to play?

When  I first arrived on a one way ticket to Bucerias in August,  Michael was back in Toronto on a contract job at the Royal Ontario Museum.  He has always supported me in my dreams.  I was on a mission to find a way for both my husband, Michael Carlyle,  and I to live and work in Bucerias, Nayarit.  We are not of retirement age.  Michael is an incredible artist and teacher.  I am a small business marketing muse whose mission is to help small business owners thrive in their communities.  With the advent of internet, Skype, social media. I believe there is a whole generation of people who understand  we are a border-less, global community with ample opportunities allowing us to explore and discover a new way of life.

Bucerias Mexico won our hearts. Michael’s love of the kind people here, the ocean encompassed by mountains, year long sun and the Bucerias art community made it a perfect fit. Michael grew up in Victoria and lived near the Royal British Columbia Museum. As a young boy he always frequented the museums. He loved to draw.  In his adult life he would take on a 20 year career at the Royal Ontario Museum   It is evident that Michael has always surrounded himself with art and he  has also collected 100′s of hard covered art books.  If he doesn’t have an easel or paintbrush in his hand, you will often see him reading biographies of famous artists from Maynard Dixon to Alfred Sisley. He is an avid student of art and evolving his art.
He attributes his success to his mentors and now friends (Tanyss & Harvey) of The Art Academy of Canada.
We are two people simply taking a step. A motto I live by is not to a life with woulda, coulda, shoulda. As Canadians we are blessed to have the freedom to go after our wildest dreams.

Opening the Bucerias Art Studio & Galeria
Michael, an artist of 20 + years and I, an entrepreneur and traveling opportunist decided this year to make a go of it and be here full time. With Michael’s talent and teaching background and with my creative entrepreneurial ways we opened The Bucerias Drop In Art Studio & Galeria on Lazaro Cardenas next to The Jan Marie Boutique. The Bucerias Art Studio on the second level, provides a venue for local and vacationing artists to gather, learn and create their work without the high cost and long term commitment of renting a commercial location.  Tuesday and Thursdays mornings Michael is onsite to provide artists constructive guidance and instruction. The rest of the week is open studio time to meet the demand of the growing Bucerias art community. Artists pay a 200 pesos daily fee to use the studio and work alongside like-minded artists. For better value you can take advantage of our monthly or seasonal rates.  We have people from all over the world for this Bucerias art experience and utilizing our open studio space. You may be painting next to someone from Paris or Oregon!  Taking beginner up to advanced Bucerias art classes at the studio is enjoyable as the space is open air, light and bright. He advocates painting from life thus teaches with real objects and people. You will catch the ocean breeze and have a view of the many tourists curiously looking up at the studio while walking down the main street Lazaro Cardenas .  While not in studio, Michael is most passionate about painting landscapes and offers plein air art workshops in Bucerias for both vacationers and locals.
Michael usually seen wearing a polo shirt, rolled up jeans with converse sneakers (or sandals when living in Bucerias) is casual by nature and intense with art. Michael has been commissioned internationally for his portrait work and has sold still life and landscapes at D&E Lake Galleries in Toronto, Mudpuppy in Windsor, Artcite in Windsor and most recently in Bucerias at The Bucerias Drop In Art Studio & Galeria. You can commission work by him, take a Bucerias art class, or purchase one of his paintings now on exhibit at The Art Bucerias Gallery. The Bucerias Art Galeria on the lower level has open art exhibits on a rotational 3 week period for local artists to show their work. Every week their art is seen by 100′s of tourists who enjoy The Bucerias Art Walk on Thursday evenings at 7pm. The hours for the Bucerias galleria is Monday through Saturday from 10am to 4:30pm.  Currently on exhibit are over 20 original pieces of art under 400 pesos ($30), perfect for a meaningful and thoughtful souvenir gift, holiday gift or host gift. The Joys of Jan at a Bucerias Restaurant

Seth Cloutman, who lived with his partner in Puerto Vallarta, was an amazing connoisseur and creator of delicious foods in many Bucerias restaurants and all over the Riviera Nayarit, and in Mexico. Sadly, Chef Seth Cloutman passed away this year, and this article is in honor of him.
Chef Seth wrote this letter about Chef Jan Benton,who is the Chef at Bucerias restaurant Mark’s Bar and Grill,  about one of their experiences together.

 

The Joys of Jan

It is a rare day when I meet another person who shares my enthusiasm for food. Okay, obsession. So imagine my surprise when on a site visit to another chef’s kitchen, I immediately found a kindred spirit and someone whose life revolves around the search for a great combination of flavors or a fresh ingredient not found before. Two weeks ago that is exactly what happened when I met Jan Benton, the Chef de Cuisine of Mark’s Bar and Grill, a Bucerias restaurant in Mexico.

Jan is a native of New Zealand but found herself in many parts of the world before she finally landed permanently in Mexico. One of her earliest training grounds was the family garden in the land of Kiwis. It was there that she developed an intense fascination with fresh, home raised vegetables. That initial education was only further enhanced when she worked in the perfume industry. In her position, it was necessary to take scents and identify them thereby honing her olfactory senses. This only assisted when she finally took to the kitchen.

Living in San Francisco she took up cooking as a home chef. One of her first dishes, one that friends requested again and again, was a Pesto Negro. It was simply a basil pesto with black olives but this was to be the beginning of what would become her
greatest passion. Soon she was hording cookbooks by Charlie Trotter, Nobu Matsuhisa of Manhattan’s famed Nobu Restaurant, Japanese-Australian Tetsuya Wakud of Sydney’s Tetsuya and Judy Rodgers of San Francisco’s Zuni Café to name a few and honing her skills.

Fast forward to Bucerias 1991.
Mark purchased the building which still houses the Mark’s Bar and Grill Bucerias restaurant, and essentially created a hot dog and beer hall where he could hang out with his buddies. Little did he realize that a year later Jan would arrive in town and that they would fall in love. One Valentine’s Day Jan suggested that they do a meal special and see what happened. They purchased 25 pounds of fresh San Blas shrimp, put a sign out on the street and before the Bucerias restaurant closed that evening, they had sold out. At the time such an investment in that much shrimp was a real risk but clearly worth it.

Since this flight of fancy, Jan has been creating menus that dazzle the palate. Her intensity when she discusses food is such a joy. The first day I met her she and I ended up huddled at the end of the bar talking about ingredients and dishes and meals like two little children discussing an upcoming vacation to Disneyland. But what impressed me most was her “food geek” level. I am often accused of being the consummate food geek (I accept this gladly) and to sit down with someone else that has the same leaning was more exciting than I can possible describe. The ability to get so feverish about a certain cooking method or flavor or flavor combination is just not up everyone’s alley.

But for all the talk about food, I had still not tried Jan’s cuisine. I admit I was a little nervous because I did not want to be disappointed. I had found a new friend and I wanted to be as proud of her actual culinary skills as I was about her knowledge and enthusiasm. One of the first things she did when I arrived after we had been introduced was to ask me to come into the kitchen and look at the tuna her fishmonger had just dropped off. As we approached she said nothing but “can you look at this and tell me what you think?” In retrospect, I think she was testing me a bit just as I was about to test her as I bit into one of her creations. Upon seeing the tuna, we both instantly agreed that it was not up to quality so without a moment’s hesitation she rang the fisherman and said, no way. That meant no tuna for that evening menu but she simply would not serve that fish.

The dish she wished me to taste was a toasted coriander seed crusted tuna filet with a wasabi sauce. She asked if I minded trying it with Huachinango (red snapper). Of course I quickly agreed.
When she brought it out the scents were amazing and when I bit into the firm fish, I was relieved not only to be enjoying the delicious flavors but also to have confirmed that not only was my new food geek friend great fun to talk endlessly with about food, but she could cook as well.

Chef Seth Cloutman

What  a wonderful writer and food enthusiast! He will be dearly missed!
Chef Seth was an inspiring cooking instructor specializing in French cuisine. He used the fresh and local flavors creating delightful food creations from Northern Italy, Spain and of course Mexico.   Seth was the owner of Food by Seth, which provided services as a private chef, wrote a book called Everything Found with Seth, as well as hosted Vallarta’s Culinary Corner cooking show, and was a weekly food columnist for the PV Mirror.  And even more,,  Chef Seth was also the founder of Nuestra Huerta, which means, “Our Kitchen Garden”, which was to create an educational garden for students in Puerto Vallarta about the complete process along with environment and water conservation, and of course how to prepare the food!

Chef Seth was considered by others a “consummate food geek” and loved this role in life. He also donated his time to help children and families in need here in Mexico.  He was dearly loved, honored and appreciated by his family and friends, and everyone that knew him in the restaurant and food industry. Here’s to you Seth Cloutman!
