Time to Celebrate!

Semana Santa all starts with a week long celebration on the Riviera Nayarit, with beaches filled with familia and friends, laughing and dancing until the early hours of the morning. The Mexicans really know how to have a lot of fun, as they love to play, and love to dance to the very loud music! One of the reasons the I adore the Mexican culture, is their sense for love for their family. Everyone from the very oldest to the little babies come to the different beach towns on the Riviera Nayarit to celebrate life. I love to watch them play, and dance to the brass bands on the beach, throw sand at each other and eat and party! If you like Mexican culture, Easter week, or here in Mexico is known as Semana Santa, is the time to come immerse yourself in the wonderful Mexican culture.

Holy Week

In the religion Christianity there is the last week of Lent, and the week before Easter. It also includes the religious holidays of Palm Sunday, Maudy Thursday or Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. It, however, does not include Easter Sunday. There are variations of the Christian Religion, and each day has a specific meaning, with certain rules. Easter Sunday, which immediately follows Holy Week, is the great feast day and apogee of the Christian liturgical year: on this day the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is celebrated.
Easter Sunday is the first day of the new season of the Great Fifty Days, Easter-tide, there being fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday.

The starting point for Samena Santa’s extensive history is the death of Christ, but the celebration that we see today on the Riviera Nayarit in all of Mexico is the result of centuries of evolution. And, on the Riviera Nayarit, it is one big party and celebration with live music going until 4:00AM and campers spread out over the beaches and filling the RV parks, bombs going off (something about the spirits) and fireworks. Everyone shares space and is quite friendly from my experiences. Its also a great way to practice your Spanish!
Its a fun time to dive into the Mexico culture as Mexicans come to the Riviera Nayarit from all over Mexico for their Semana Santa vacation. Here is Fanny selling yummy cakes and Fidel selling oysters on the playa.

Riviera Nayarit Kite Surfing Competition

The most challenging of water sports, Kite Surfing has become very popular, as it takes riders across the waves, combining windsurfing, surfing and parachutes along with a very strong and agile body makes it a very extreme water sport on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico this year. The competition starts on Saturday, March 10th through March 17th with the minimum of four races each day. The judging with be held with the International Kiteboarding Association regulations.
The competition begins at Huanacaxtle to Bucerias. The International Kite Surfing competition will take place from Sunday, March 11 to Saturday March 17th.
The Kite Surfing competition is big this year, with an expected 50 competitors coming from over 10 different countries. Word has it that the World Champion Sean Farley Gomez, 2010 World Champion Adam Koch and 2011 World Champion Johnny Heineken will be competing this year as well.

The best place to view the racing is Bucerias, where there is plenty of room on the beach to take some great photos and have some fun watching the event.

Los Amigos on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico

There are plenty of fundraisers in the Jaltemba Bay during the winter season, and the Los Amigos is preparing for one more big party before the season ends on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.
As the calendar turns to March, many of the seasonal residents of Jaltemba Bay start to think about making plans to head back north. But before you do, Los Amigos de Jaltemba, theCitizens Action Committee of La Peñita and the Municipal Delegation would like to invite you to one last big bash: Fiesta 2012 –Taste of Jaltemba / Sabor a Jaltemba.

Come and Join the Party

The party is on Saturday, March 10 from 3 pm until midnight at the Salon de Eventos – Real de Peña’s – formerly known as La Cancha de Futbol. Tickets are only 100 pesos per person – food and drink are extra, of course.

There will be non-stop entertainment from 3 until midnight. Dance to the Perez Brothers, En joy the stylings of Adan Lopez, Manuel and Friends, and many others. And, later on, Los Ratones and Los Chakas will take the stage. There will be belly dancers, flamenco dancers and folkloric dancers from
the Conalep. And we’ll even throw in a few surprises.

Come and Enjoy Tasty Cuisine

Food? El Pollito, Vista Guayabitos, El Rodeo, Teriyaki Time, Rockys, Chasite, La Casita de Irma and Marios Tortas will all be there and you’ll get a chance to sample fare from all of these fine establishments.

Los Amigos is proud to work with the Citizens Action Committee of La Peñita and the Municipal Delegation in putting together this event. The Citizens Action Committee is working hard to build a sense of community and we are pleased to be a part of that effort.

Los Amigos Accomplishments

Los Amigos has accomplished a great deal over the last few years. Our plastics recycling program is recycling about 4000 kilos of plastics every month. We are currently providing scholarships to 36 students at the Conalep. We have completed 11 building and maintenance projects at local schools
and are now working to establish a Teachers Resource Centre. We have helped remove abandoned buildings from the beach and worked with partners to bring a micro-finance program to the area. But we need your help to continue this work

So come out to meet old and new friends, have a great time – and support a great cause.

Music on the Riviera Nayarit San Pancho Style

Its that time of year again, and the 12^th annual San Pancho Music Festival will be opening in San Francisco (San Pancho), Nayarit, Friday February 24^th at 5:00pm on the beautiful Riviera Nayarit in Mexico. The Festival will be held for three days, Friday through Sunday the 24^th through the 26^th. Performances are free to the public and begin each afternoon at 5pm, typically ending prior to 12pm midnight.

San Pancho Music Festival History

San Pancho’s Music Festival is a vibrant, eclectic expression of performing art traditionally held annually for 3 days during the last weekend of February. It began informally in 2001, and by 2006 included some 116 performers. The Music Festival attracts some of the most colorful musicians from around the world, including international acts from Europe, the U.S., Chile, Guatemala, France and Germany. Regional talent has also been retained to include the traditional Mexican and Latin music of local musicians. (Werther Ellerbrock, on left and below Dave Fisher, both played in the 2011 event)

Musicians Play for Free

Traditionally there is no fee to attend, and performers are not paid. The Festival is entirely supported by the gracious contributions of local musicians and international recording artists, and by the local residents of San Pancho. Artists come to perform because they enjoy performing in the intimate venue and magical surroundings of San Pancho. It is a truly wonderful balance of amateurs and professional performers coming together for 3 days to share an unforgettable and enriching musical experience in one of the most beautiful regions of Mexico. Donations are encouraged, but there is no intent for the Festival to profit from the performances. Additionally, proceeds from sales of music and video CD’s go directly to the performing artists.

San Pancho Community Park

This year the Festival has been moved to the community park in San Pancho due to street construction and remodeling of the Plaza. Seating in the park is festival seating only, and is somewhat limited. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets. Restaurants like the Blue Pig and bars like Ponchitos, who make the best drinks in town, and shops like Galeria Serendipity with amazing native Indian beading and the cool kite shop San Pancho Aire Paplotes next door that has kites and very colorful windsocks. They will all be open throughout the event to serve the crowd. There are also plenty of rentals at San Pancho Rentals…Caren will be happy to find the perfect place to stay so there is no worry about drinking and driving. Eat, drink, dance and be merry in San Pancho!

The Art of Surfing in Sayulita, La Caleta, Chacala and on the Riviera Nayarit in beautiful Mexico

Ahhhhhhhh. Perfect condtions!! Early morning, clear skies, surf cracking on the beach, creating the desired barrel shape – this is what we wait for! Time to grab the board and wax ! A couple of great places to learn how to surf are Chacala and Sayulita Mexico. Why not get away to the Riviera Nayarit for some surfing on your Easter Holiday? Here is a great view of the Chacala town and beach.

How is a Wave Created?

To understand what causes surf, we look at the swell direction, tide and wind. These factors combined in the right combo creates the desired shape for a good surf . When a wave rolling along encounters a sand bar or rocky bottom, the lower part of the wave’s energy drags against this resistance and slows down. The top part of the wave’s energy continues moving at the same speed and that is why it starts tipping forward, eventually breaking. The more dramatic the bottom profile of the reef or sandbar, the hollower the wave becomes. The direction of the surf break is also dependent on whether the area has a hard bottom or a sand bottom. Sand bottom peaks move around the beach and transfers the sand so the peak doesn’t stay the in the same location. These, however, are preferable for beginners to learn this popular sport. Lessons are usually provided for basically all ages. Surfers have progressed into the more “mature” age bracket in recent years, unlike the syndrome of years gone by, where the perception of surfers were associated with youth, hippies, budget travelers, etc. We now see surfers of all age brackets, many with very high tech and expensive boards and accessories.

Lessons in Chacala

We have chosen to focus on the very professional surf lessons offered by a 40 year surfing veteran in Chacala Mexico.
The instructions are very easy to follow, with an initial briefing, and practical moves and tips out of the water, you will then

proceed into the ocean on the sandy bottom conditions of the main beach in Chacala, with the

instructor at your side at all times. Check out their website here. You will slowly be taken through the maneuvers, talked through the formation of the wave that you need to look for and before you know it, your up taking the ride of your life. Riding down the face of the wave just on the sheer power of the natural ocean. The feeling is so exhilarating, and it’s no wonder this sport is becoming so ever increasingly popular and was/is the * sport of kings! *sport of kings – *(exerts from surfing handbook)

Next step -LAS CALETAS!!

Las Caletas is very unique, due to it’s natural and isolated location, with jungle surrounding a slightly rocky point and bay that is most easily accessed by panga. This pleasant short ride will take about 10 minutes for a slight fee, depending on how large your group is. (price is per boat, not per person)
This is only a left break because the rocky point faces south. The waves hit the point and wrap around into the cove.

These conditions make for a larger surf break, hence attracting more experienced surfers from Mexico and around the globe. The Origins of Surfing

Tracing the origins of surfing, we know that the sport migrated from Western Polynesia to the Hawaiian Islands somewhere around 1000 A.D. But, back then, it was much more than just a sport, it was a way of life, bordering on religion. All classes surfed, but the Hawaiian kapu system of laws was in place. Chiefs were tops, and they used the sport to prove their strength, agility and royalty over the commoners. They even held contests with land as the stakes.

Even the making of surfboards was a ritual. Kahuna would search in earnest for just the right tree. Once found, they would sacrifice a fish as an offering to the gods and stand guard over the specimen overnight, praying for successful completion.

What Kind of Surfboard Do I Need?

Surfboards themselves, even further defined the social classes of kapu. There were four types, three of which were surfed upon only by the commoner: The Paipo, a short board, 2’ to 6’ in length and mostly ridden by women and children; the Alaia, 6’ to 12’, for the more agile surfer; and the Kiko’o, 12’ to 18’, for the advanced wave rider. The fourth board was the Olo. It was 15’ to 18’ and reserved for the ali’i, or ruling class.

And the ali’i did surf.

In 1810, when Kamehameha became the Hawaiian Islands’ first king, he united the islands into one royal kingdom. Not only was Kamehameha a great warrior and diplomat, the dude was a surfer, man!
And the sport of kings was the sport of queens, as well. One of Kamehameha’s wives, Ka‘ahumanu, was a surfer, too. The couple surfed Kooka, a break located at Pua`a, in north Kona, often riding lele wa`a, or canoe leaping

In, lele wa’a, surfers jump from an outrigger canoe, with their surfboard, and then ride the wave to shore. Not an easy maneuver, lele wa’a further illustrated the ali’i’s strength and prowess over the commoners.
A half-century later, missionaries came in and not only killed off the better part of the Hawaiian population with STDs, but they also considered surfing hedonistic and banned it altogether. But another king endeared to surfing, would come along to the rescue. In 1872, upon the death of King Kamehameha V, King Kalakaua came to power and immediately reinstated the sport of surfing.

These are the roots of the sport we all love. Surfers are not bums. On the contrary, surfing is, indeed, the sport of kings. And Mexico surfing is alive and well!

Artisitco Cultural In Rincon de Guayabitos

Every year the Convention and the Visitors Bureau of Rincon de Guayabitos and the Association of /Hotels and Motels of Compostela organize the Festival Artisitico Cultural Rincon de Guayabitos every Saturday in the month of February on the beautiful Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.
This is the seventh year for the Art and Culture festival and its all happening in the town square in Guayabitos.

The dancing and music begins at 8:00 pm and will feature many different musical artists as well as dancers like the Mexaltitan Ballet and the music of the String Ensemble from Esculea Superior de Musica, and singing with the Choir of the State of Nayarit.

Riviera Nayarit Community Fun

Its the middle of January already and the Riviera Nayarit in beautiful Mexico is in full swing for the winter season. There have been many community functions and business attractions, and we want to share some of them with you! There is always a lot happening on the Riviera Nayarit, and you can check out the happenings on AllSayulita.com, AllSanPancho.com, AllLodeMarcos.com, AllGuayabitos.com, AllLaPentia.com and AllChacala.com.

The Third Annual Jaltemba Bay Rotary Fundraiser

The third annual Jaltemba Bay Rotary fundraiser was held this last Saturday on the 21st of January, 2012 at Tonita III in La Penita. The festivities included the beautiful Mexican Tepozcalli dancers from Las Varas and live music for some dancing with Manuel and Son. A lovely chicken dinner was served that included any beverage of your choice.
There was also three different auction fundraisers, the Chinese Auction, the Silent Auction and a Live Auction, which made for a really fun time! Every year the Rotary Club members give out awards to the outstanding citizens in Jaltemba Bay.
This year there were four volunteer groups that were recognized and honored for their services to the community.
If you are interested in becoming a Rotary Member, the Rotary meetings are held every Wednesday at Pina Coladas at 8:00am in Guayabitos. I am very proud to be a Rotary member here in Mexico and help bring in changes that help the peoples and the community without changing their wonderful culture.

Whats up on the Guayabitos Strip Mall

The Guayabitos Strip Mall is located behind the Oxxo in Rincon de Guayabitos, and has a lot to offer!
Starting out with Beauty by Aurora. She has a full staff and offers hair shampoo, cut and style, hair coloring, highlights and hair attachments. Manicure the hands and pedicure the feet, change your polish or add gel nails. Waxing for legs, bikini lines, lips, eyebrows, underarms and back. Aurora offers a complete line of hair and skin care services. Come and visit Aurora….you deserve it!

Next in line is the Espresso Internet Cafe, where you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee or a tasty latte’ while you check your e-mail.

And, what is a day without a great workout? Come and work off ail of those extra holiday pounds at the Fitness Pad. The Fitness Pad has 20 fitness machines including treadmill, stationary bikes, a full kickboxing bag, adjustable 6-setting ab/crunch bench and a pull-up tower! There is also a entire free weight system with a professional trainer on staff. Dell also has some fun workout clothes as well as other fun things to wear out and about. She has some great specials as well.

Then its time to eat! One of the best places in Guayabitos to eat at is TeriYaki Time Restaurant. Yakisoba, chicken, beef or shrimp teriyaki, fried rice and a variety of pasta dishes are served daily made fresh to order. Try a large fresh salads for lunch or check out their daily breakfast specials. They also make a great Thai Iced Tea, and have a good selection of wine and beer.

Annual Amigos de Lo de Marcos Fundraiser

It s that time of year again, and the Amigos de Lo de Marcos is having their amazing annual fundraising event on the beautiful Riviera Nayarit in Lo de Marcos Mexico. It all starts on Friday, February 3rd, at 8:30am, with a town “Walkabout” with a guided tour of Lo de Marcos. The tour will visit sites where the Amigos of Lo de Marcos works with the town, and will also cover the water issues of Lo de Marcos. There is also the new town compost project which is a great success!

When the tour of Lo de Marcos is finished there will be breakfast served at the Lo de Marcos town square.
The following day on Saturday, Feb 4th the Silent Auction begins at 4:00pm, along with the huge rummage sale that you will not want to miss as well as freshly baked goodies for purchase. And what would a celebration and fundraiser be without ice cold beer and tasty margaritas? They will be served later in the evening form 7:00 to 10:00 pm. along with dancing to the Latin reggae sounds of two local bands, Mal Bichos, as well as some fun Salsa music with Rhythm Eleison. Come and support the town and peoples of Lo de Marcos!

The 2012 Pro Surfing Tournament

On January 12,13 and 14 the 2012 Pro Surfing Tournament in Arroyo Seco was amazing. Felipe Hernandez (left), age 21 from Sayulita, Nayarit took the first place for the Men’s Pro Category, as well Adan Hernandez, age 24 from Sayulita, taking 5th.
Edgar Rodrigues, age 14 from San Pancho took 4th place in the Sub 18 Category and Adan Hernandez (right) from Sayulita was presented a trophy by Artemio Rosas for “Arroyo Seco Pro 2012 Surfer of the Year”, recognizing his involvement in a large number of important international tournaments and his support for the surfing industry. It was really an amazing time and I loved covering the event, as all of the people I met were really cool and well as the fact tht surfing is a big thing in Mexico and all over the planet! The entertainment with DJ PIN, Christian Reggae by Majhave, and Christian Rap by 12 Clan was awesome and they all rocked the house.

Whale watching season usually starts on November and ends at the last week of March. However, January and February are the best months for you to get a glimpse of these species (particularly humpbacks and gray whales) in Banderas Bay and Matanchen Bay. If you want to have a more memorable experience by closely interacting with these gentle giants, then you might want to try whale watching in Jaltemba Bay. In here you will find shallow waters where gray mother whales take care of their calves. You can touch and see them eye-to-eye, thus giving you an amazing experience that you will never forget.

A Mexico vacation is considered as the top tourist destination in Latin America and currently the tenth place in the world. Areas such as the Riviera Nayarit are teeming with historical sites, rich culture, and exciting attractions that many people, even the locals, have come to enjoy and love. Although this country is renowned for its iconic monuments and dazzling white beaches, there is one thing that you must try especially when you happen to visit this colorful nation between the months of January and March. It is called whale watching.

Whale watching has become a celebrated tourist activity especially in the Mexico Pacific where these big cetacean mammals usually show themselves off shore, proudly spouting water from the blowhole above their heads while flapping their huge tails against the sea surface. Not too many people are fortunate enough to see real live whales in person and witnessing this kind of whale action can certainly lead you breathless and in awe.

There are daily whale watching tours and overnight excursions that are readily available for you to choose from during these months. These tourist companies will not give you a guarantee for whale sightings, but you will have better chances (usually nine out of ten tours) when you visit the Mexico Pacific at the end of January to early March.

There are some reminders that you need to watch out for as soon as you have decided to try whale watching at the sunny beaches of Mexico. There are several types of whale watching tours that is suitable to all kinds of tourists. If you are doing this with your kids, you need to choose a day tour where you would spend less time in the water and more time on the ground. November 20th Holiday in Mexico

Whether you are in Sayulita, San Pancho, Lo de Marcos, Rincon de Guayabitos, Chacala or La Penita, everyone on the Riviera Nayarit and in the Country of Mexico are celebrating “The Day of Revolution”, which will be celebrated through Monday as well.

The Day of Revolution, or in Spanish, Día de la Revolución, is celebrated every year in Mexico on November 20th. The anniversary of the 1910 start of the popular movement which in fact led to the overthrow of dictator Jose de la Cruz Profirio Diaz Mori after serving 34 years of military rule, also ushered in over a decade of civil war.

This day is celebrated in Mexico as the beginning of the Mexican Revolution that ran from 1910 to 1920 and was called for by defeated presidential candidate and reform writer Francisco Ignacio Madero. In fact, the day itself represents a misfire.

The Plan of San Luis Potosí

While in exile in San Antonio, Texas Madero wrote a political document that was later published in the Mexican city of San Luis Potosí and hence became known as “The Plan of San Luis Potosí.” Madero called for the people of Mexico to rise up and the begin a revolution about 45 days later at 6PM on November 20th.

On November 20, 1910, Madero arrived at the border and had planned to meet up with 400 men that had been raised by his uncle Catarino to launch an attack on Ciudad Porfirio Díaz, modern-day Piedras Negras, Coahuila. Unfortunately for Madero, his uncle showed up late and had only brought ten men. Seeing this, he postpone the armed conflict to begin the revolution.

Madero was not alone in his revolutionary actions against Diaz. Other well known names in the revolution were Emiliano Zapata in the south, who championed the struggle to return lands to the people through grants we now know as ejidos. Poncho Villa was also a supporter of Madero’s revolution, changed from bandit to revolutionary and was responsible for the revolution in his region, with the Division of the North.

The Government Offices and Stores Close

Sunday, November 20th is in fact the actual holiday. However in Mexico, when the holiday falls on a weekend the following Monday is celebrated as a holiday as well. So that means that this year expect banks, government offices and many local businesses to be closed on Monday November 22, 2010. Some major shopping stores and are usually open. Most restaurants stay open as well.

Have a fun time on the Riviera Nayarit in beautiful Mexico on this celebrated holiday, and plan on taking this Monday off as well!
