A New Bucerias Community Farmers Market

There is a new Bucerias community  farmers market in Bucerias this season on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.  It’s a bit different due to the fact all of the vendors are Mexican Nationals. The new market is called the Bucerias Monday Mexican Gourmet Market. Click on the photos to go to the photo gallery. Click on the links for more Bucerias information.
Check out the Bucerias Community Calendar for Bucerias community news, events and live music.

The Bucerias Monday Mexican Market
The Bucerias Monday Mexican Market is located at the Bucerias Art Walk Plaza, which has a very convenient Bucerias community location just south of Mark’s Bar and Grill at 62 Lazaro Cardenas. They open at 9am and close about 2ish.
The Market is organized by Christy Ann Beguesse, a long time local of Bucerias. She states, “Our goal is to bring you the best in Mexican Cuisine made from the freshest ingredients in the kitchens of our Mexican neighbors. My hope is that with your support we can assist our neighbors financially and unite the community with a better understanding of the Mexican culture.”

Christy also helps support many fundraisers for food drives for the Bucerias community during the year as well, coordinating with other nonprofit organizations like the John Ozzello Food Bank, and Tercera Edad, the local Bucerias senior center, especially during the hardest month of September. This month is also called “Septhungre”, due to the starvation problems here during that time. Any time you feel like donating foods, they can be dropped off at the Art Walk Plaza.
If you are a local national and would like to get into this market, contact Christy at TheBuceriasArtwalkPlaza@gmail.com .

All of the vendors at the Bucerias Monday Mexican Market are  full time Mexican residents of Bucerias. So many locals struggle through the summer to make ends meet, and of course, not just in Bucerias, but all over the Bahia de Banderas.
This Bucerias community market will continue hopefully into the summer months if there are enough local people to come and purchase products.

Delicious Mexican Cuisine
There are some very delicious foods being prepared at the Bucerias community Monday farmers market. All of the foods are homemade authentic Mexican cuisine. Serving up enchiladas, fruit waters, fresh frozen chickens and ducks as well, along with chicken and duck eggs too!, artisan cheeses, honey, flan, delicious juicy carnitas carved right in front of you with the tacos piled high for only 10 pesos, (delicious with all of the toppings) beef or mushroom empanadas (enjoyed the mushroom!) topped with chimichurri and salsas’ that are cooked fresh and hot at the table, and homemade tamales wrapped in banana leaves.
A woman sells homemade banana muffins and other muffins. These are the largest banana bread muffins I have ever seen. I suppose they are bread loaves, in the shape of a large muffin; I can attest that they are moist and delicious. There is a medicine / herb table as well. In the corner a local Mexican artist with paintings along with the art and crafts that are spread throughout the market makes the ambiance colorful and fun. Out in front by Pacific Boutique Properties is a very nice selection of jewelry at terrific pricing, and delicious nuts…all cooked in front of you, like the delicious sweet caramelized pecans.
Its nice to purchase form the Bucerias community nationals. Living here all year around, I do see the summer struggles. It is a long summer for everyone here on the bay, as most depend on tourists every winter. These folks do know how to live off of the land, having chicken and ducks, gardens and crafts of all kinds. They have learned how to survive (sometimes just barely) and it’s nice that they bring their delicious and authentic Mexican delights every week to the new Monday farmers market. I love all of the markets, another favorite being the huge La Cruz Sunday Market, who also supports many of the local nationals and their businesses.

The products are at Mexican pricing…which means low! When you purchase from these locals, you are sure to know that your money stays here in Mexico, and trickles down to their families. Come on over and check out the new Bucerias Monday Mexican Gourmet Market. I for one had no problem eating my way from booth to booth….Buen Prevecho!

2nd La Cruz Sunday Market of High Season

It was Sunday morning and the La Cruz Sunday Market comes alive for the second market of the high season.  La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is located on the Riviera Nayarit in amazing Mexico. This is where one of the best Mercados is found…the La Cruz Mercado.
It was another hot day  and the early birds were already there. I drove in looking for a parking spot and with place pretty full, but somehow I always manifest a good space.
Upon entering the La Cruz Sunday market the band Expiral was playing English songs that everyone could sing along, mostly older rock – n – roll.  The ambiance of the La Cruz Mercado (market) was very upbeat and enjoyable with a good crowd.  The La Cruz market is held alongside of the La Cruz Marina, so the Malecón was lined with vendors of every kind of product all the way down past the La Cruz Fish Market, and down to the end of the jetty.

The venders at the La Cruz Sunday Market provide organic food items such as sunflower honey made in Guadalajara, and Organic Peanuts with Carahuate Carlos, (from PV), homemade Chimichurri and pickles..spicy or German style from Alberto are excellent.  Check out the home made jams….it’s fun to walk around sampling all of the goodies!
Natural homeopath items and fresh farmers market products also abound with soaps and body butter creams from Oxnards Country House Soaps. Great lip balms too!  and if you enjoy aromatherapy oils, many of the creams have them. Having skin issues?…come on over and talk to Greg.
Arts and crafts with many made from plastic bottles or recycled items like these butterflies! and oh so much more!

The good food abounds with many folks that catered to the North American and Mexican comfort foods. Sandy with Hand in the Kitchen Catering, who makes dishes you can take home when you do not feel like cooking, or at the end of the jetty there Hecho En Mexico Bakery..they have gluten free products this season, tasty breads and cookies and orange sticky yummy rolls. The  grill sizzles down at the end with the La Patagonia folks making their grilled steak sandwiches and smoked marlin empanadas. ,.soo good!..Cold fresh juices and also Coco Frio..I really love the cold  fresh green coconut juice.

Passing and visiting every vendor’s booth, I looked around and took in the fluidity of the mingling of different cultures, enjoying the combination of music, food, and the many various forms of art.

Many of amazing jewelers like smiling Chelow from Sayulita who makes fun jewelry, and Chantel, who makes jewelry out of spoons…very cool!  Art is abundant, and hosts a numerous selection. From the Yukon, Arte Metalcio, Ron makes amazing home and garden decorations that also light up out of metals, and other art projects.

Even though it was hot, they have tarps up for shade, and everyone along the walkway has umbrellas, making the market quite enjoyable. Its super fun walking through the market, sampling the goodies all morning. The La Cruz Sunday Market ends at 2pm.
While walking through the market, I ran into old friends, and made new ones as well!  Its fun to stop at Oso’s Oyster Bar for a cold beer as well on occasion.
Stopping at the La Cruz Fish Market for fresh tuna on the way out for dinner to go with the market goodies was absolutely perfect, creating a delicious meal for the evening.
The La Cruz Sunday Market,  officially named the La Cruz Mercado  is a wonderful place to be on Sundays!

Check out the La Cruz Sunday Market this season on the La Cruz Marina, located on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.

Bucerias  Airstream / Parked RV Rentals

Bucerias Rentals can vary on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.

At Los Arroyos Verdes, we have all kinds of Bucerias rentals, one being a  airstream (Bucerias RV rentals) for staying.  If you want to stay in our space, in something different, try the airstream. We also have full amenities at our RV park. If you want to bring your own house on wheels, you can do that too and stay here with us.

I love the Airstreams, their dynamic design, their ability to travel and they last a lifetime due to the fact that they are made of aluminum. When I began to build Los Arroyos Verdes, I always wanted to have an airstream in the gardens on site, for the visitors. And it turns out it is my most sold room, at $80USD a night; something different for your stay at Los Arroyos Verdes for  Bucerias rentals

One day, as I was driving around Bucerias on the main road, I saw the airstream parked next to a taco stand. I stopped to look at it, in its perfect condition from 1967. I asked the owner of the taco stand who it belonged to and he said “it is mine”. I said “yours??” and I asked him if he was interested in selling it. He responded “why not!”

I walked up to check it out and entered it. It wasn’t in the best conditions inside, but as the good architect that I am, a thousand ideas started coming to my mind about how to fix it up to make a nice Bucerias rentals addition.
“It’s Christmas” said the owner, “My daughter lives in it, can it wait until after Christmas?” I told him “Of course not, I want to take it home today!” In the end, we made a deal and I helped the daughter pack all of her stuff in boxes and I left with my shiny airstream on the way to Los Arroyos Verdes, which at the time was still completely under construction. We polished it, cleaned it, straightened it up, connected the bathrooms, water, gas, electricity, television and now we have another room at Los Arroyos Verdes, creating another fun  Bucerias rentals.

The airstream is surrounded by gardens and has access to all of the amenities if you stay in it.  Our amazing pool, gym, Bamboo Restaurante, Temezcal (sweat lodge) and spa. We also have a area specifically for pets! with their own dunking pool… So, come and stay with us, come and get to know our space, come and visit! Check out all of our Bucerias rentals, one and two bedroom casitas,  and our One Bedroom Villas  and Two Bedroom Villas, lofts and of course, the airstream!

Los Arroyos Verdes has also recently added their Two  Bedroom Villas for SaleLocated 5 minutes from the Bucerias Beach and Bucerias Centro makes a perfect location for short or long term stays.

Entreamigos, located in the San Pancho community (San Francisco, Nayarit)  is an amazing non profit organization that offers recycling, gardens, art, a store, a restaurant and classes. Stop by to browse or for breakfast.
Its a great way to give!

Entreamigos Summer Workshops

It was entreamigos  biggest summer ever with 215 kids participating in events and 98 volunteers! Woo HOO!  Now that’s rockin! Four weeks of summer fun for the San Pancho kids all of ages in a variety of classes with the ages of children ranging from 4 to 14.  They had crazy adventures like Xtreme sports, paddle boarding, art, swim lessons and just about everything in-between.   There were more than 45 classes all taught by volunteers who  joined them from Canada, United States and all over Mexico.  These programs would never have made it if not for all of these amazing volunteers! Kudos to all of you who made this possible for the kids of San Pancho!
This summer 18 University students from the prestigious private Mexican Universities, Iberoamericano, located in Mexico City and ITESSO located in Guadalajara came to volunteer.  They joined  entreamigos to do their 480 hours of practical social service required for graduation.  This amazing and diverse group of kids brought their skills in product design, marketing, architecture, engineering and education to work on ongoing and new entreamigos projects.   These kids made a fun video about their experience. This video really shows off  all of the aspects of entreamigos, and volunteers at work. Check it out!

50 SAN PANCHO KIDS VISIT CIRQUE DU SOLEIL!!!!
A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to Gilles Ste. Croix and Monique Voyer for inviting 50 San Pancho kids to see the preview showing of the Cirque du Soleil show, Varekai, that just opened in Guadalajara. What an amazing treat for these kids. The kids took a deluxe bus to Guadalajara, many visiting Guadalajara for their very first time.  They enjoyed front row seats and pizza afterwards.  It was an amazing opportunity!

Back to School
In Mexico, school started in August and the kids are back in school.  This year, thanks to the many, many donated backpacks and school supplies donated to entreamigos. These donations were able to help nearly 200 kids get a fun, fresh start to the year! So many brought in school supplies, and special thanks go out to Dream Trips volunteers from World Ventures, who have donated nearly 100 backpacks in their recent visits! Way to go Dream Trips!

The Scholarship Program…The Best Part for the Entreamigos Team
There has been given 71 Scholarships for students, and now 9 are attending Universities!
These programs would have never made it if not for all of the donations, and the time and energy of the amazing volunteers!

A special thanks to the director of entreamigos, Nicole Swedlow, who had a vision back in January of 2006, and continues to put in endless time and energy for entreamigos children and adults alike.
A Fun Journey  Started With a Vision
Nicole Swedlow began teaching arts and crafts on her old kitchen table in the street in front of a little storefront that she had rented. Her idea was to invite local artists to sell their crafts in the store and in turn for a reduced commission rate on sales, and in return they would be asked to teach an art class to children or adults in the San Pancho community.

The store sat empty and was not getting off the ground a cash gift of a friend, John Arner helped buy inventory to make the store look more like a store. This and “the project” began to attract visitors, artists and began to gain more interest.

In the summer of 2006, entreamigos had two breakthrough events with the start of the Summer Workshops and their first Planta San Pancho reforestation day.   In 2007 Indira Santos and Plantate Baronio joined entreamigos and together they expanded the upstairs of their storefront to create a small library. The Recycling program and the Recicla Parque initiatives took off, the Scholarship program was launched and by the end of 2008, it was clear that the activities of entreamigos could no longer be contained in the small space or the street. In April of 2009 the State Government granted entreamigos the use of a giant abandoned warehouse. With the amazing response from the community, along with funding of the Three Swallows Foundation, the building was remolded and has expanded into the San Pancho Community Center it is today.
April of 2009, when the State Government of Nayarit granted entreamigos the use of a giant abandoned warehouse (bodega). A resounding and generous response from the community coupled with the funding impulse of the Three Swallows Foundation, provided the resources necessary to remodel the building.

Entreamigos continues the work that began with Nicole back in 2006, seven years ago! They enjoy teaching what they know to others, and all are invited to join in. Although there are many ways to donate, like sponsoring a child in summer, or a scholarship student or a special project, the truth is that all of those things wouldn’t exist without the everyday, normal hard work of the entire entreamigos staff.
What a wonderful success for the San Pancho Community!
Their hours are: Monday to Friday    9am – 6pm and Saturday  10am – 2pm
Special events and classes may have different schedules.

La Cruz Marina Fish Market

The Riviera Nayarit is lined with small fishing villages, one being La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, where the La Cruz Marina Fish Market is located. Every beach town has a fish market, and some have several fresh fish shops, bringing to you the fresh catches of the day.
We are lucky to live on the Banderas Bay.  The Banderas Bay is the largest natural Bay in Mexico, among the 10th largest worldwide, and one of the deepest bays in the world reaching depths of over 3,000 feet.  Extending across 68 kilometers (42 miles) of the Pacific Coast, the bay begins in the south at Puerto Vallarta, flows northwest into the Riviera Nayarit at BuceriasLa Cruz de Huanacaxtle and Punta de Mita, continues north beyond Sayulita and through Lo de Marcos where it joins Bahia Jaltemba Bay. The trade of fishing has supported the local fishermen and their families since the beginning of the pueblos.
When buying fish, what is better than being able to go a fish market, like the La Cruz Marina Fish Market, and purchase a freshly caught fish, shrimp, lobsters, oysters or other ocean favorites?  It really doesn’t get fresher than that, unless you are out fishing yourself!

Although the summer time means less tourists and part time residents, the La Cruz Marina Fish Market is a place that always has customers. The fishermen are there every day of the week selling their fresh catch. Not all of the bays are full right now. There were 4 of the bays open last Sunday. Many local restaurants come to purchase their fresh catch of the day. Every time I go, I learn a little bit more about purchasing fish from one of the locals.

It can be overwhelming with the many different types of fish at the market, and they don’t always have the same kind of fish. It depends on what is “running” that day, and their luck I suppose!
I went to the La Cruz Marina Fish Market to purchase some Tuna, but no one had any. They all told me “tomorrow”, which really means, “When we catch some!”
The fishermen don’t speak English very well. It’s good to know a few words of Spanish that will get you by. Take a Spanish dictionary with you if you need to. If you want to fry, bake, grill, or poach, or make ceviche, these fish mongers know what fish cooks the best way. Sometimes you can get lucky and meet a fellow shopper that is bilingual.  Most folks here are quite nice, and do not mind helping with translation when needed.
Asking what kind of fish it is helps as well Que es esto?  (what is it?)
Also, do you want a whole fish, or a filet? Purchasing a whole fish is not as expensive as having them filet one for you. I prefer them to filet the fish for me. They expertly cut the fish, and clean the small bones and cut out the blood line, which is the deep red strip inside. This can make your fish taste “fishy”.  I have also read that leaving your fish directly on ice will suck the flavor out of your fish into the ice as the ice melts, so proper wrapping is important.  These guys will also devein and peel your shrimp! You can also ask for the trimmings to make your own fish stock for delicious soups.

I was having friends over for supper and wanted to have a little variety.  I chose a Pargo, and also some Mahi Mahi. The Pargo was a big guy, whole, and is much like a Red Snapper. Since I love Red Snapper, I thought I would give it a try.  (The large fish (Pargo)  on the end in photo to the left)
The Mahi-Mahi was already filleted.  A local man standing next to me with his young daughter suggested me to choose the more “red” looking piece as it would have more flavor, than a totally white filet.  Both were delicious, and we all enjoyed flavorful and spicy pan fried fish that Sunday evening.

Visit your local fish market. You won’t be disappointed. Whether you’re in PV, Bucerias, or the wonderful La Cruz Marina Fish Market , you can’t go wrong with the Fresh Catch of the Day!

The La Cruz Marina Fish Market is located in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, on the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.

New Malecon in La Penita Mexico

It was a bright bluebird Riviera Nayarit day when I visited La Penita, Mexico  to get some recent shots of the new malecon, and the newly paved streets a couple of days ago. Standing on the new La Penita malecon and looking out over the ocean viewing Coral Island off in the distance with the pelicans lining the beach was stunningly beautiful!
As it has seemed like forever, the vision that was once a dream for many years is now almost completed.  The La Penita Malecon is finished, and it looks like it has been well worth all of the dust, torn up streets and the long wait.  Old structures were torn down, as well as the streets being torn up during the high season; enduring all of the dust and the mess last year has now unfolded to a new and very beautiful malecon that all will surely enjoy. There is still some work left to be done on the new sidewalks. There are some deep rectangular deep holes for the electrical work that are not blocked off so watch your step! As, one could seriously injure oneself!

The new La Penita Malecon is quite a beauty to behold, with inlaid pebbles in a zig-zag design and the Riviera Nayarit logo painted at both ends.  There are plenty of very comfortable benches for seating with Queen Palms planted next to them that will someday bring the beautiful shade.  The new light posts add to the charm.  Easy wide steps lead up to the malecon, as well as wheelchair ramps making the malecon assessable for everyone.

La Penita, Nayarit, a very authentic Mexican pueblo,  is located between Rincon de Guayabitos and Chacala on the Jaltemba Bay.

La Penita has not seen any town upgrades for quite a while.  Not only is La Penita a family town, but also an industrial town, where you can go and get anything that you are needing to build, create or fix. This Mexican pueblo is a favorite for many visitors and snowbirds that relocate for 6 months out of the year during the high season, from November through April, or until Semana Santa begins!

The beachfront La Penita restaurant, Las Brisas, who use to set up tables on the beach serving ice cold beers and great burgers, looks like they are remodeling and gearing up for high season with the newly built malecon right in front of the restaurant. Hytham and Lucy of El Rincon Del Arabe have moved to their new location which is just up from the malecon on one of the new streets and will be selling all kinds of fun Arabic / Egyptian  items, as well as their awesome menu of delicious delights.

Things are looking up for La Penita Mexico!

The La Penita Tianguis runs all year long, every Thursday, starting at 8 am and ending about noon to 1 pm..during the summer.  It is the largest tianguis on the Riviera Nayarit during the high season.

I am quite sure that everyone venturing to La Penita Mexico will be quite pleased this coming high season, as the locals are already enjoying the ambiance of the La Penita Malecon, right here on the Riviera Nayarit in amazing Mexico!

Visit La Penita Mexico and check out the new La Penita Malecon, and enjoy your time on your Riviera Nayarit vacation!

Riviera Nayarit Tacos are “Cheap Tacos”

If you have ever been to the Riviera Nayarit in Mexico, then you know what I am mean when I write about Riviera Nayarit  Tacos, or “Cheap Tacos”.  The price ranges from 8 pesos to about 12 pesos. Some Riviera Nayarit taco restaurants charge more for shrimp and other meats. No matter what Riviera Nayarit pueblo your staying at, from Bucerias to Chacala with San Pancho and La Cruz  in between, you are going to find some of the best Riviera Nayarit Tacos you have ever tasted!
The vendors are everywhere selling Mexican tacos, and just about anything that can be created in a  tortilla! Vendors with carts roam the Riviera Nayarit Mexican Pueblos, or the Taco Carts find their corners and put a few tables around them so you can sit down to eat.  There are also the Taco restaurants, which are much larger with many tables for sitting and eating, and serving all kinds of delicious Mexican drinks, like Orcheta, (a rice and milk drink)  Jamica (a red flowered plant ) and Atole (a hot corn drink), all which have a lot of added sugar.  I enjoy making my own Jamica with a lot less sugar right at home!    The folks that live here seem to have their favorite Taco eateries…I know I do!

Fresh Tortillas
I love watching the women in the Riviera Nayarit restaurants and stands making their own tortillas. Tortilla after Tortilla. I like to go and tMasa Mix (Harina de Maíz)ip them personally. What a labor of love!  Tortillas, made from corn are still a big part of the mainstay in the Mexico diet. Kernels are cooked with lime to remove the husk, and ground down. They then form the corn in to little round balls, and either pat out by hand, or put in a tortilla press, known as a tortilladora, and are used only for Corn. You can also hand roll them, but I have heard its not that easy! You can also purchase the Masa mix to make tortillas as well.
The options of what you can put in a tortilla is endless! Every town also has a shop that only makes tortillas called a tortilleria. There are also guys riding around on mopeds and bicycles selling freshly made tortillas. Find one of these guys and he will deliver directly to your house. Purchasing freshly made tortillas is wonderful!

A Wide Variety of  Riviera Nayarit  Tacos in Mexico

There is a lot of different tacos on the Riviera Nayarit.  It took me awhile to figure out what the vendors were selling when I first moved to the Riviera Nayarit in Lo de Marcos. For me, I really enjoy the Adobada style. The Asada, or steak tacos have finely chopped beef.  If you have ever ordered a regular beef steak here in Mexico, you know then why they cut their meet into very tiny pieces.

  • Tacos de Asador (“spit” or “grill” tacos) may be composed of any of the following: Carne Asada (beef)  tacos; tacos de tripita, (Tripe tacos), grilled until crisp; and, Chorizo Asado (traditional Spanish style sausage). Each type is served on two overlapped small tortillas.  and sometimes garnishes can include guacamole, variety of salsass, onions and cilantro.
  • Tacos de Cabeza or head tacos, in which there is a flat punctured metal plate from which steam emerges to cook the head of the cow. These include: Cabeza, a serving of the muscles of the head; Sesos, (“brains”);  Legua, (“tongue”) which I have seen a lot;  Cachete (“cheeks”); Trompa  (“lips”); and, Ojo  (“eye”).
  • Tacos de Cazo for which a metal bowl filled with lard is typically used as a deep-fryer. Meats for these types of tacos typically include: Tripa  (“tripe”, usually from a pig instead of a cow); Suadero  (tender beef cuts), Carnitas and Buche (Literally, “crop”, as in bird’s crop; or it is fried pig’s esophagus
  • Tacos sudados (“sweaty tacos“) are made by filling soft tortillas with a spicy meat mixture, then placing them in a basket covered with cloth. The covering keeps the tacos warm and traps steam (“sweat”) which softens them.

Tacos de suadero (grey) and chorizo (red)

  • Tacos Al Pastor de Adobada are made of thin pork steaks seasoned with adobo  seasoning, then skewered and overlapped on one another on a vertical rotisserie cooked and flame-broiled as it spins.
  • Tacos dorados (fried tacos, literally, “golden tacos”) called flautas (“flute”, because of the shape), or taquitos, for which the tortillas are filled with pre-cooked shredded chicken, beef , rolled into an elongated cylinder and deep-fried until crisp.
  • Tacos de pescado (“fish tacos“) originated in Baja, where they consist of grilled or fried fish, lettuce or cabbage, pico de gallo, and a sour cream or a spicy mayonnaise sauce, all placed on top of a corn or flour tortilla.
  • Tacos de camarones (“shrimp tacos“) Grilled or fried shrimp are used, usually with the same accompaniments as fish tacos: lettuce or cabbage, pico de gallo, avocado and a sour cream or that spicy citrus/mayonnaise sauce, all placed on top of a corn or flour tortilla.

Most Riviera Nayarit taco places have a variety of toppings available with whole or sliced red radishes, limes,  salt, pickled or grilled chili’s and  jalapenos, cucumber slices, and sometimes they also serve delicious small whole grilled onions on your plate.

For me, I love going out for Riviera Nayarit Cheap Tacos every week. They are tasty, and the people are always friendly.  Dining out for 50 pesos is right in my budget! Minus the Coronas with lime !!

Saving Turtles in San Pancho Mexico

In San Pancho Mexico, (also known as San Francisco Nayarit), the  San Pancho Mexico Turtle Project began  on April 16, 1993, when theLogo Grupo Ecológico de la Costa Verde, A.C. received official recognition by the MexicanNursery Government to become the first environmental non-profit civil association of the region with the special interest in the protection of the marine turtle.  Through the Mexican Government, SEMARNAT (Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources) the Group was granted permission to continue its work along the neighboring beaches. The board of directors was created to carry out the objectives and goals via voting, with the officers now in standing; Frank D. Smith as Director, Maria Elvia Garcia Palmera, Secretary, and Rocio artinex Ocegueda as Treasurer.

They and the volunteers work day and night protecting the turtles by removing the eggs form the nests so poachers can’t collect them, usually at night. They have had terrific success! Frank also writes a monthly newsletter, and you can sign up for it here.

Being a completely non-profit organization in San Pancho Mexico, they need your support, whether its you time, money or equipment. there is always a way to help out.

Nests Saved in San Pancho Mexico
The Number of nests recorded by the end of July came to 108, (down 16 nests from last July.)  Around 96 were placed in the box nurseryOlive Ridley, 5 were left in place on the beach and, unfortunately,  7 nests were taken by poachers. I suppose that is pretty good odds considering! All seven species of sea turtles are endangered worldwide and all are protected by law. Turtle meat, eggs, leather or shells are illegal to own or to sell and the penalties are very severe.
This year the almost extinct Leatherback turtle nested in San Pancho. There is a huge difference in the size between the Leatherbacks and the Ridley species. The leatherbacks are truly amazing giant turtles! They did not see the mother turtle on the first  nesting, but got to release those little darlings, helping to ensure the species survival. Most of the turtles laying eggs on the Riviera Nayarit are of the Ridley species and the Pacific Green Turtle.

They rely on volunteers, and this July 2013 they are: Joslin, Starlie and Summer Bertrand, Kristen Barbour, Patricia Dombrowski, Megan Ewald, Lisa, Carly and Annie Hoffner, USA and Amalia Sedlmayer, Germany, Manuel Murrieta, México, and Lisa Fisher, Canada.
These volunteers not only take care of the nurseries, and collect the eggs at night, but also clean up the trash on the beaches. Did you know that turtles eat jellyfish? Now, there is a happy thought, if you have ever been stung by one!
Well, the turtles also mistake plastic for food! The plastic holders that hold the bottles can also get wrapped around animals bodies, necks and faces. Please, don’t litter, and help pick up the trash when you can. This San Pancho Mexico Turtle Team is AWESOME!

When to see a Turtle Release
The turtle releases in San Pancho Mexico are at the sunset hour, down in front of the restaurants on the San Pancho beach. The hatchlings look for the subtle light reflecting off the surf and waves to direct them towards the sea.Hatchlings Other forms of  lighting can point them in the wrong direction, and wandering about on the beach can lead to almost certain death. Even hatchlings that eventually find their way to the water can be too exhausted to swim – becoming easy pickings for fish. The lights from houses and restaurants play a large role in the disruption of nesting sea turtles and they can get lost or confused, and also confusing to the hatchlings.Olive Ridley

There has also been some concern with the heavy rains and flooding, as the beach nursery could get washed away.  The turtle nests need to remain dry for the first 12 days of incubation.  When eggs drop from the nesting turtle they are soaked in a antibiotic water solution, glossy, cream-white in color.  At the point when the eggs hit the sand its shell must quickly turn a dry, chalk-white color.  This transformation will allow the eggs to shed water, sand and bacteria, and most importantly, it will allow it to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen.  Although white eggs may die if they receive heavy rain or flooding waves anytime within the first twelve days of incubation.

How do the Turtle Eggs breathe???
How do eggs breathe under eighteen inches of damp sand??? Its all about the tide coming in and out.  As the tide goes out, a large amount of water under the beach will go out with it. This allows air to be drawn down through the sand and around the nest.  As the time come in, it pushes carbon dioxide up and out of the next to the surface, much like an air bellow. And…this is how they can breathe…its so amazing! Thanks for all of the terrific information Frank!
